Indian head massage is a gentle, seated treatment that works the scalp, neck, shoulders and upper back. You stay fully clothed for around 45 minutes of light-to-medium pressure, with a short consultation first. Many people find it eases everyday tension and leaves them calmer, clearer and more grounded — an easy, accessible way into massage.
The 8 benefits of Indian head massage
- It helps you unwind. Slow, rhythmic work over the scalp and shoulders gives your mind somewhere quiet to land. Studies suggest a short head massage may gently shift the body toward its "rest and digest" (parasympathetic) state, and has been associated with lower self-reported anxiety immediately afterwards. Most people simply describe it as feeling deeply relaxed.
- It supports your body's stress response. Stress shows up in the body as much as in the mind. A small 2016 study associated scalp massage with lower cortisol — a stress hormone — and lower blood pressure, and broader reviews find massage consistently lowers cortisol straight after a session. It's one reason a 45-minute treatment can feel like a genuine reset.
- It releases tight neck and shoulders. This is where so many of us hold the day. Indian head massage spends real time on the neck, shoulders and upper back, and research suggests neck and shoulder massage has been associated with short-term relief of neck and shoulder tension compared with no treatment.
- It works gently at everyday head and neck tension. If you tend to feel tight around your temples, jaw and the base of your skull, focused hands-on work can feel like a release. Research suggests massage and trigger-point work on the neck, shoulder and head muscles has been associated with fewer tension-type headaches in the short term — and an Indian head massage devotes real, focused time to exactly those muscles.
- It eases screen and desk fatigue. Hours at a laptop leave a familiar ache across the shoulders and up into the scalp. Because the treatment targets exactly those areas, it's a favourite with people who work long days at a desk.
- It's a gentle, accessible first massage. You stay fully clothed and seated or reclined, so there's nothing to navigate if you're new to massage or feel unsure about undressing. The pressure is light to medium and easy to adjust — a calm, low-pressure introduction.
- It leaves you feeling grounded. There's something quietly settling about having your head and shoulders cared for. Many people finish feeling clearer and more present, as though the noise of the day has dropped a notch.
- It's a calm wind-down before sleep. A slower nervous system and looser shoulders can make it easier to switch off in the evening. If winding down is something you find hard, you might also like our guide on how to fall asleep faster.
What to expect at your appointment
Every session with Jade begins with a short consultation, so she understands how you're feeling and where you'd like her to focus. You stay fully clothed and settle into a seated or reclined position — nothing to undress for, and no oils in your hair unless you ask.
From there it's around 45 minutes of calm, flowing work across the scalp, neck, shoulders and upper back, at a light-to-medium pressure you can adjust at any point. You have a private room, free on-street parking on Chapel Lane and the roads nearby, and a herbal tea afterwards to ease back into your day. We're open 9am to 9pm every day, so it's easy to find a time that suits.
Who it suits (and who should check first)
Indian head massage is a good fit if you spend long hours at a screen or desk, if you tend to hold tension in your head, neck and shoulders, or if you're new to massage and want a gentle, fully clothed place to start. It's also a lovely option when you simply want to feel calmer without booking a full-body treatment.
If you have a scalp or skin condition, or any specific medical concern, just mention it at your consultation — Jade can adapt the session, and it's always worth checking with your GP first if you're unsure.
How it compares to our other massages
Jade offers a range of treatments, each with its own character. Indian head massage is the shortest and most accessible; aromatherapy adds the calm of essential oils; deep tissue goes further into the muscles; lymphatic drainage is the lightest of all, using slow, rhythmic strokes to ease puffiness and fluid retention.
